Begin by examining all of your motives and actions and seeing if you are in fact overstepping your limitations and trying too hard to change things which are not your responsibility to change.

Once this is done you move to the step of being proactive about your future based on where you want to be in five years or even ten. Most of the time people are only proactive based on things which they want to avoid or to prevent, but this will not ensure anyone that they will get what they really want out of life. Instead of looking ahead at the circumstances which you believe that life will send your way and planning on how to deal with them, decide what you really want. Once you do this, you will find that you are much closer to managing your life on our own terms and leading yourself where you want to go.

Finally, develop an action plan for achieving your goals which is both measurable and flexible. You may have heard that you can’t manage or improve what you cannot measure, but this is only half of the need when it comes to an action plan. Any plan which is not flexible enough to be adjusted according to the desired results sows the seeds for its own destruction. Make sure that your plan is based on action steps which are small enough to be adjusted along the way in order to ensure that the end goal does not get compromised. This will ensure that you will persevere and reach your long term goals.

With all of these in place, you will soon develop the most important characteristic of a leader and be well on your way to leading others. That one characteristic is a having a direction which inspires and motivates you to stay focused and productive. The world is much quicker to get out of your way and even to follow you if you demonstrate that you know where you are going. Not only that, this kind of personal leadership will ensure that people will be more apt to forgive you when you fail. Then you will see that leading others is a natural result of personal leadership.
