Adult Education Center Is Better Than Community College
A few years ago, I attended an adult education school. It was great. I had tried a community college program before and thought I like it, until I tried this center. The classes at the adult school were concise and didn’t contain any filler classes.
I feel like I have wasted those three years at the community college. Some of the classes were not necessary and wasted my time. There were breaks in between classes that were sometimes three hours long.
The community college had beginning dates in September and January, but still only offered specific classes in each semester. It seemed I didn’t have much of a choice when and how the classes were attended. Basically, I felt like my life was being controlled by this school for three years.
Classes began anywhere from 8:30 and on and ended sometime before 6:30. Some days would be long and some short. It was almost impossible to get a part-time job with this kind of schedule. It was also very exhausting. We usually had to keep track of at least 5 different classes each week and worry about when exams were and when assignments were due.
I decided to go back to school after I was unable to get a job in my field. I was a little wiser this time around. I had decided to go to and adult school for the main reason it took only 8 months to complete and still came out with a diploma. If I had chosen to go back to community college it would take 2 years.
This school was amazing. Classes began at 8 and ended at 1 everyday. We had 15 minutes breaks during the classes in which we were able to leave and come back. The programs were structured and organized.
I really liked the structure. We did one subject at a time that would usually last about two weeks, rarely one and sometimes three. This allowed me to concentrate on one thing at a time. It was great because there was never more than one assignment to do or more than one test to prepare for at a time.
The adult school provided an employment specialist. She would help us write resumes and prepare for interviews. She gave us an inside scoop on what employers were looking for and some interesting techniques to get the job.
Before community college, I did attend university for one year. I did not like it at all. My teachers did not even know I existed. There were 300 people in my class and it was basically learn on your own. I did not like that experience at all.
I rank the first one I attended, university, the worst. It was a lot like the community college except the class sizes were larger. The community college is second, because of the ability to get to know your classmates and teachers. The adult education center is first because of all the reason above; class size, flexibility, time to complete, and daily schedule.
